Hi All, Im new to this forum and am asking for a little help with a new 55 gallon tank. As an FYI I have run fresh and salt in the past but this is my first time at Cichlids (feisty little buggers)
I've been up and running for 2 weeks now, ammonia is at 2 ppm with no nitrite in sight yet. I know the environment is a little dicey and Ive already lost a female kribensis. My question is about black spots appearing along the flank of my female yellow lab. Spots are running from tail all the way up to the mouth including pectoral fin and gill slit. Does this sound familiar to anyone? No odd behavior from the fish but Id like to be able to treat if I can. Also, any indication about when I might see a nitrite spike? I'm using microbe lift but so far no cycling.
Thanks for any input

It is difficult to safely and effectively treat a fish with high ammonia present. I am honestly not sure of your fish' condition, but suspect the high ammonia is a major factor. I would perform a medicated bath using salt and Methylene Blue Please see this article: Aquarium Answers; Fish Baths As well I would use Prime to neutralize the ammonia in the aquarium. As for cycling, Microbe Lift is not a true cycling product as it contains Heterotrophic Bacteria, which are for breakdown of wastes, but are not the rue bacteria of cycling (which are Autotrophic) Please read this article for more about this and consider using seasoned filter media or possibly SeaChem Stability (which is still not a 100% cycling product either though): Aquarium Nitrogen CycleCarl

this may sound dumb, but how do you know your "female" lab is actually a female? if thre's another dominant male in there, the one under question could just not be displaying it's true colors out of "fear".......I've had this happen before - how old/big are they? being monomorphic, it's really hard to tell
